Evading Big Brother

Together with Dr Dylan Yamada-Rice, I have written a journal article for Visual Communication, detailing some of the findings from our EPSRC HDI Network funded Countermeasures project.

The journal article can be found here:

Evading Big Brother: Using visual methods to understand children’s perception of sensors and interest in subverting digital surveillance

In the article we discuss the workshops we ran with children aged 8-12 years old, investigating what they understood about the sensors and components which are embedded inside the smart devices they own, using creative research methods. In particular we describe how smart devices, and the language used to describe them by technology companies, could encourage children to adopt magical and fantastical explanations of device capabilities, and how this could put them at greater risk of digital surveillance.

More information on the Countermeasures project can be found here.
